What are Electrolysis Treatment Modalities?

Electrolysis is the only proven method for permanent hair removal, however there are multiple treatment types referred to as modalities—Galvanic, Thermolysis, and Blend—each have distinct advantages depending on your hair type, skin sensitivity, and treatment goals.

Galvanic (Direct Current)

Galvanic uses current traveling in one direction to create a chemical reaction in the follicle that destroys the hair growth cells.

  • Slower than Thermolysis – Current is applied for 4-15 seconds per follicle.

  • Less Regrowth - The chemical process created with galvanic ensures greater hair growth cell destruction. This means each follicle requires fewer treatments before it permanently stops producing hair.

  • Comfortable for Sensitive Clients – Generally less painful compared to other techniques.

  • Minimizes Hyperpigmentation - No heat is generated with galvanic. It is less prone to hyperpigmentation (dark spots). This is more common in clients with melanin-rich skin.

  • Effective on Stubborn Hairs - More easily treats stubborn, curved, or distorted follicles from to waxing or tweezing.

Thermolysis (Alternating Current)

Thermolysis uses high frequency alternating current, which also generates heat. This side effect of heat is what destroys the hair follicle’s growth cells. This method is:

  • Fast – Each treatment pulse is for hundredths to tenths of a second resulting in shorter insertion times compared to galvanic.

  • Visible Progress - More hairs can be treated per session compared to Galvanic or Blend.

  • Comfortable – More discomfort than galvanic because of the heat generated. However, some clients prefer Thermolysis due to shorter insertion times.

  • Preferred by Most Clients - The most common treatment modality preferred by both electrologists and clients.

Blend (Combination of Thermolysis & Galvanic)

The Blend method combines high-frequency thermolysis with a direct galvanic current, providing of benefits of both. Key benefits include:

  • Slower than Thermolysis, Faster than Galvanic – The heat generated from Thermolysis speeds up the chemical reaction of Galvanic and allows it to penetrate the follicle faster.

  • Ideal for Resistant Hair – Works well on coarse, curly,  or deep-rooted hair that may be harder to treat with thermolysis alone.

  • Comfortable for sensitive skin – Generally less painful compared to other techniques.

  • Minimal Skin Reaction – Less prone to skin reactions.

Which Electrolysis Modality Is Right for You?

All three modalities are effective and will get you to your hair-free goal in approximately the same timeframe. Your electrologist will assess your specific hair removal needs and recommend the best technique for optimal results. Whether you choose Thermolysis for speed or Blend for enhanced follicle destruction, both methods ensure permanent hair removal.
