What Skincare Products Should You Avoid During Electrolysis?

Some skincare products and treatments can increase skin sensitivity or interfere with healing after electrolysis. To ensure the best results and minimize irritation, it’s important to avoid certain ingredients and treatments before and after your sessions.

Products to Avoid:

Check the labels on skin care products you use for these ingredients.:

  • Retinols including Tretinoin, Adapalene, and Tazarotene – These products increase skin sensitivity and skin reactions. Avoid for at least 3 days before and after treatment.

  • Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA’s) including glycolic, lactic, malic, tartaric, and mandelic acids. – These products increase skin sensitivity and skin reactions. Avoid for at least 3 days before and after treatment.

  • Hydroquinone – This is a prescription medication typically used to treat pigmentation, stop using this medication 7-10 days before electrolysis.

  • Accutane – This is a prescription medication typically used to treat acne, stop using this medication at least 6 months before electrolysis.

  • Fragranced Lotions & Alcohol-Based Toners – Harsh formulas can sting or further irritate the treated area.

  • Laser Skin Treatments – Certain laser procedures may make the skin more sensitive. Avoid at least 2 weeks before electrolysis.

  • Botox and Collagen Injections – Avoid at least 15 days before electrolysis.

  • Waxing, Sugaring, & Threading – Removing hair by the root interrupts the electrolysis process, making treatments less effective.

Best Practices:

  • Gently exfoliate the treated area 1 to 3 times a week.

  • Use gentle, fragrance-free moisturizers to keep the treated area hydrated.

  • Shave or trim the treated area 3-4 days before your appointment.

  • Avoid sun exposure and always use broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin.

  • Follow your electrologist’s specific aftercare instructions for optimal healing.
